Did you know that 20% of all insect species are infected with an endosymbiotic bacteria that feminizes the host populations it parasitizes? In this workshop, you will learn all about this widespread and incredible bacteria-insect interaction and learn how to detect the presence of the bacteria in individual insects using PCR.

This workshop is for science teachers to:
• Incorporate biotechnology into life science curriculum
• Learn about bacterial infections of insects
• Explore feminizing effects of these microbes on insects
• Learn techniques for DNA extraction and PCR
• Participate in real-world science!
