GFP Purification: Secrets of the Rain Forest
A protein, discovered in leaves of a rare plant native to a tropical rain forest, is found to be a possible cure for cancer. Students grow laboratory safe genetically engineered bacteria and purify the green fluorescent protein from the cells using column chromatography. Students explore the multiple issues involved in developing a pharmaceutical for market in this simulated activity.
