The Santa Clara County Biotechnology Education Partnership (SCCBEP) is an ongoing collaboration among secondary teachers and educators, the Santa Clara County Office of Education, industry, higher education, and private individuals. Our common goals are to bring cutting edge biotechnology and science education to students and teachers in Santa Clara County schools. Since its inception in 1992, SCCBEP has grown to provide lab equipment and reagents to students and teachers in public and private schools of Santa Clara County. Support is extended to some schools in Santa Cruz and Salinas. SCCBEP regularly offers teacher education workshops in biotechnology lab procedures and teaching methods; classroom support for teachers; public education events for students, teachers, and others; and a network of teacher collaboration among interested teachers in the Bay Area.

SCCBEP currently supports biotechnology labs and curriculum including restriction analysis (DNA typing), DNA extraction and spooling, bacterial transformation, protein purification using chromatography, and individual experimentation. PCR labs supported by BABEC and Applied Biosystems are also available. SCCBEP Outreach Educators manage distribution of materials and reagents for these labs through "kits, " which circulate among participating schools and teachers. SCCBEP also offers Summer Workshops to help teachers to learn safe use and implementation of these materials in the classroom.

SCCBEP is an exciting, growing volunteer organization providing a vital pubic service of educating Santa Clara County students and teachers using current methods of science. For further information, please contact Katy Korsmeyer, SCCBEP Biotechnology Partnership Coordinator.
