Teenagers Doing Real Science
The
Bay Area Biotechnology Education Consortium is dedicated to young people
throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. BABEC promotes biotechnology
education by providing laboratory equipment and supplies, developing curriculum,
and sponsoring frequent workshops for both students
and teachers.
Students benefit greatly from a well-planned biotechnology education program.
The topics of such a program, which have already made their way to the movies
and the evening news, are extremely relevant for students.
Thought-provoking classroom discussions leads to a deeper understanding of the
social and scientific issues involved -- which is critical if we are to maintain
an informed electorate for our democracy.
Students
also benefit from and enjoy the hands-on approach that biotechnology offers.
The lab work requires critical thinking, team work, effective communication, and
disciplined laboratory practices. Students work hard, motivated by
intriguing scenarios and rapid feedback, and they are justifiably proud of their
results.
Finally,
BABEC's biotechnology curriculum reinforces many concepts from molecular
biology, genetics, chemistry, and mathematics. Students can actually
experience the direct application of these classroom topics, and answer for
themselves the eternal question, When will we ever use this?
BABEC's extensive outreach is made possible by its close association with six
regional partnerships in the Bay Area and by the
generous support of its supporters.
