PCR Amplification of Alu PV92 Workshop for Teachers

Workshop Description

This advanced 1.5-day workshop is intended for teachers who are interested in teaching the Nobel prize winning PCR technique to their students. Participating teachers will first learn in detail the basic concepts and components of PCR. They will then isolate their own DNA from cheek cells obtained from a saline mouthwash, PCR amplify the Alu loci on their genomes, and separate the resulting DNA fragments by agarose gel electrophoresis. Then, using the on-line Allelic Server bioinformatics tools and database developed by the DNA Learning Center, participants will map global distributions Alu PV92 insertions and speculate on how the marker migrated among historical populations.
